What do I need to know about impact resistance and lenses?
Sunlenses are made from a number of different materials, some of which have good impact resistance and some which are poor. We believe that sunglasses will be worn when playing sports or driving or a myriad of other activities where an impact might occur and so our view is simple: high impact resistance is crucial.
For us, this rules out glass and CR39 which have good optical properties but poor impact resistance and leaves two serious contenders: polycarbonate and NXT®/Trivex®.
Polycarbonate is cheap and has good impact resistance, but has mediocre optical properties. NXT®/Trivex® is expensive and has excellent impact resistance and optical properties.
All our lenses are manufactured from NXT®/Trivex® .
